Just a couple of races ago it seemed nothing would stop Hamilton from becoming the youngest world champions .... and here we are ... In a season things can change those who can learn and adapt can come out of difficult situations and achieve greater things, Ferrari did just that ... When the car wasn't performing Kimi and his teammate Massa never complained they just went about their job. Second one, this is something we have heard quite a bit but something we take lightly because we hear it so many times, i.e., just give your best and have fun, forget about the results if you are doing it right success will not elude you for long.

You never fail until you stop trying

Here is a nice story that I came across ...

There was once this guy who is very much in love with his girl. I had three options for paragliding the short, medium and long rides, the short ride is about 5~10mins, medium is 10~20mins and long is 30~60mins. All the jumps start pretty close to the top of the 16,000ft mountain ... in the medium ride we jump from about 15,000ft to land at a point where the altitude is about 9000~10000ft, it takes approximately about 10~20 mins to glide down depending on the wind conditions.

So, I reach the spot where the paragliding team is based, I was told that a pilot to handle the parachute would be with each rider and just need to follow his instructions. They took us to the spot from where we start the glide, and strapped us up to the parachute. We are strapped to the parachute which is still on the ground, for it to open we need to run down the hill and pull it against the wind. The scary part is the first few steps you are running free down -hill not knowing when the parachute will open ... it just took a couple of steps and we were airborne like birds ... I thought it would be a gut wrenching experience, but once we were in air it was just amazing the parachute glides smoothly and did not feel uneasy at all ... after a couple of mins into the ride, I sense my pilot is shivering, I wasn't sure if it was because of the cold wind or because something was wrong ... I looked up to check the strings of the parachute to make sure everything is ok and I did not see anything to worry about (my amateur eye could not find anything wrong J), I did not ask him if there was a problem because I did not want to sound scared :). It is very evident that the calf could be rescued only because the herd fought with the lions and clearly the lions were overpowered and outnumbered by the herd. But it is also important to note that what spurred the herd to take the unprecedented step to attack the lions was a brave buffalo that selflessly decided to do what it had to do, i.e. to rescue its calf at all costs. A great example of how things can work well if people can come together to deal with challenges that we face today.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Usually each individual's decision is based on what is right for his/her self. According to Dr Nash's Nash equilibrium theory, if we were to make a decision based on what is right for the self as well for the group, the outcome of the decision could benefit the group as a whole.

To get a sense of how the Nash equilibrium works, consider the following scenario. Twenty people are dining at a restaurant that offers a luxurious $20 meal and a simpler $10 meal. The diners have agreed that the group will split the bill evenly. Suppose each person, if he had to pay only his own bill, would prefer the $10 meal. Despite these preferences, it is not a Nash equilibrium for everyone to choose the cheap meal, since for each individual, switching to the expensive meal will cost him only 50 cents more. The only Nash equilibrium is for all the players to choose the $20 meal. Unfortunately, the decisions of each member of the group result in the least desirable outcome for the group as a whole.

Of course things are not as simple as stated above, for us to act collectively and for the above theory/assumption to work we need to know what are the thoughts/plans of individuals involved in a scenario. So, this may not work in all cases because not everyone will be forth coming with what they want and how they want to achieve it. But there are instances when things are in black & white, when it is easy to know what everyone wants, let us take an real life example, people pay bride because they are either trying to do something illegal or want to get things done fast at the cost of everyone else. Now, if nobody paid bribe there would be no reason for preferential treatment and everyone gets an equal opportunity, things would start to work as they should for everyone.

I guess things are much more complicated then I am assuming here but it does appear that if we stick to what is right for us and also the group, things would definitely improve ...

Lose control

I recollected one of my meeting with a friend and thought of sharing it here. He suggested we go to the movie Jurassic Park - II, I said the review for the movie was not so great besides the novelty factor wasn't there it would probably be same as part-I. He said he knew the reviews were bad but wanted to go to the movie so that when he could shout to vent his frustration, since the sound would be loud and it would be dark in the theatre nobody would notice that someone is shouting. As they say we are what we think, if we are frustrated about something avoiding confrontation will not solve the problem, it has to be dealt with sooner or later. We always tend to maintain status quo as we do not want to make things worse, but if things are not set right they begin to play on our mind and it will affect our actions subconsciously and make things worse anyway.

There are times you just cannot stand someone and feel like retorting back but for the sake of some reasons we hold back. If the problem has long term consequences, will get into action right away, try to solve the problem through dialogue or any sensible means that can improve the scenario, even if I know that it cannot be turned around in my favor I try whatever I think is the best solution in that scenario, it may not work but at least will learn something in the process of trying and also have the satisfaction of having given my best shot.

Life outside work

Sometimes I feel we live just to work, except for a few days in a year from morning till night we are either doing work/business or preparing for it. We can get so consumed by our profession/work that we forget to realize that there is more to life than work, there never seems to be time to do all the good things we love or should I say we do not make the effort to take the time out because we are paranoid about getting left behind.

There was a phase in my career, when I would start work early and continue to work late till night. There were times when I had slogged for 24 hours at a stretch. I used to commute at odd hours, basically quite early in the morning and late in the night, the traffic was so less at that these times that I could literally close my eyes and drive. And I was in this phase for quite a few months, for some reason one day had to leave office early, i.e around 7PM in the evening. As I was about to pass through the front office, the gentlemen at the front office asked me if I had taken half day leave :). On my way to home I realised that I was struggling to drive because I was no longer comfortable driving in the rush hour traffic. I was feeling so strange, it felt like some vehicle around me would crash into me and I was so shaky and so conscious that instead of focusing on the road ahead am watching the vehicles around me. It made me wonder how I could feel so shaky in driving through this traffic, because it wasn't the first time I was driving during the rush hour. It wasn't hard for me to realize that I was out of touch not just with driving during normal hours but many other things. All I cared about during that phase was work, everything else had to wait or was given a pass.
